Membership

Membership in Washu-Kai costs $20.00 per year.

Washu-Kai has an annual general membership meeting in August. The general membership also meets in January to celebrate the past and the new year.

A member-only annual art exhibition is held in November in Room 101, Casa del Prado, Balboa Park. The exhibition is not juried and there is no entry fee. The exhibition is open for viewing by the public free of any charges. In addition to painting and/or calligraphy, the exhibition also features a fashion show of wearable art. Ikebana Masters' floral arrangements and Koto music enhance the show.

A monthly workshop is held on the first Wednesday of the month (10:00-2:30) in room 104, Casa del Prado, Balboa Park. The monthly workshops provide opportunities to access a wealth of knowledge from a variety of Washu's graduate students -- those who have been granted a professional art name (gago), after they completed 10 years of study.

Although membership in Washu-Kai is very beneficial, membership, by itself, will not be of sufficient benefit for a beginning painter to quickly gain the expertise necessary to become a masterful sumi-e artist. You have to practice more often than once a month (daily practice, preferably). It is highly suggested that beginners seek enrollment in a San Diego County Community College that has sumi-e classes, or through private instruction.
